CT Heating Oil Rebates and Efficiency Programs in 2026

March 2026 · 5 min read

Connecticut homeowners who heat with oil have access to significant rebates through Energize CT and utility programs. Most people don't know they exist, or assume they only apply to electric heat systems. That's not the case — oil-fired equipment upgrades qualify for meaningful incentives.

Important: Rebate amounts and program availability change annually. Always verify current offers at energizect.com before purchasing equipment or beginning a project.

Energize CT: The Main Program

Energize CT is a joint initiative of Eversource, United Illuminating, Connecticut Natural Gas, and Southern Connecticut Gas — administered on behalf of ratepayers through the Energy Efficiency Fund. Heating oil customers in CT can participate even if their primary utility is electricity, because the fund covers whole-home efficiency measures.

The program is managed regionally. Your primary utility (Eversource or UI) is usually the entry point for residential programs, even for oil heating upgrades.

High-Efficiency Oil Boiler and Furnace Rebates

Replacing an older oil boiler or furnace (typically 70–78% AFUE) with a high-efficiency unit (85% AFUE or higher) qualifies for rebates. The rebate structure as of 2026:

EquipmentMinimum AFUETypical Rebate
Oil boiler (hot water)85%+$300–$600
Oil furnace (forced air)85%+$200–$400
High-efficiency oil boiler (condensing)90%+$500–$800

These rebates are processed through the participating contractor who installs the equipment. Ask your dealer or HVAC contractor specifically whether they're enrolled in Energize CT and whether they'll handle the rebate paperwork. Most enrolled contractors do this as part of the installation.

Cold-Climate Heat Pump Add-On

The most significant incentive shift in recent years is funding for dual-fuel or hybrid systems — adding a cold-climate heat pump to an existing oil heating system. In this configuration, the heat pump handles heating down to around 20–25°F, and the oil system kicks in for the coldest days. This can reduce oil consumption 40–60% while maintaining full backup capacity.

CT rebates for cold-climate heat pumps range from $500 to $1,500+ depending on the system and income level, and federal tax credits (the Inflation Reduction Act's 25C credit) cover an additional 30% of the cost up to $2,000. Combined, the incentives can offset $2,000–$3,500 of the installation cost.

Smart Thermostat Rebates

Energize CT offers rebates of $50–$75 per smart thermostat for qualifying connected thermostats (Nest, Ecobee, Honeywell Home, and others). These are available through your utility — check your utility's online portal or call for the current offer. Some utilities offer instant rebates at the point of purchase through retailers.

Home Insulation and Air Sealing

The single highest-return investment for oil heating homes in CT is typically air sealing and insulation, not equipment replacement. Energize CT offers rebates covering 25–75% of the cost of insulation and air sealing work done by a participating contractor, with low-income households qualifying for the higher end or free weatherization through the CT Weatherization Assistance Program.

An energy audit (free or subsidized through Energize CT) identifies where your home is losing heat. For most older CT homes, attic insulation and basement rim joist sealing deliver the fastest payback.

Income-Qualified Programs

Connecticut also offers enhanced benefits for income-qualified households through the CT Energy Efficiency Fund and the federal WAP (Weatherization Assistance Program). These can cover 100% of weatherization costs and offer larger equipment rebates. Income thresholds are at or below 80% of area median income. Contact your utility's low-income program office to apply.
